If you’re like me and love exploring peaceful, offbeat, and historic places near Pune, then let me share my experience of visiting Bedse Caves (Bedse Leni). Recently, I set out with my travel partner to explore this underrated spot, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the most serene and memorable trips.
Unlike the more crowded Karla and Bhaja caves, Bedse feels untouched – almost like stepping back into time. Nestled in the hills of Maval taluka, Pune district, these ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves date back to the 1st century BCE/CE, built during the Satavahana period. Many don’t even know they exist, and that’s exactly what makes them a hidden gem.
🏞️ Location & How to Reach
- From Pune: Around 50 km (1.5 hours by bike or car).
- From Lonavala: Just 9–10 km (20–30 minutes).
- The caves are accessible from the Pune-Mumbai highway – simply take the Kamshet route towards Pawna Dam.
Once you reach Bedse village, there are about 400 steps leading up to the caves. Don’t worry – the climb is fairly easy and takes around 15–20 minutes. The best part is the view you get once you reach the top – a perfect blend of history, greenery, and calmness.
🏛️ History & Architecture
Standing in front of the Chaitya (prayer hall) at Bedse Caves was truly mesmerizing. It is about 28 feet high with a central stupa, surrounded by tall pillars. The carvings on the pillars include lotus motifs, elephants, and horses – simple yet so elegant.
The caves mainly consist of:
- Chaitya Hall – A grand prayer hall with a stupa where monks once meditated.
- Vihara (monastery) – Small cells carved into the rock, which were used by Buddhist monks as residences.
- Stupa & Carvings – Symbolic of Buddhist traditions and spirituality.
Interestingly, Bedse was also once known as Markut, and though smaller compared to Karla or Bhaja, it carries an authentic charm of its own.

🌿 My Experience at Bedse Caves
What I loved most about Bedse was the silence. No crowds, no chaos – just the sound of nature and echoes of history. Sitting inside the cave, I tried to imagine monks meditating here thousands of years ago. The atmosphere was so peaceful that it felt like time stood still.
Another highlight was the artwork – though not as flashy as some other caves, the detailed carvings reflect simplicity and spirituality. I honestly felt this place deserves more recognition than it gets.
At the base of the caves, there’s even a stay option for around INR 1400, where you can enjoy food, a swimming pool, and a cozy village vibe – perfect if you want to extend your trip.
🌧️ Best Time to Visit
The monsoon season is hands down the best time to visit Bedse Caves. The entire hill turns lush green, waterfalls flow down the cliffs, and mist covers the valley – it feels straight out of a movie scene.
If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend going early morning or late evening. The sunlight at these times beautifully highlights the carvings inside the caves.

- Families: The short trek makes it kid-friendly and safe, though be cautious while descending as the steps can get slippery.

For me, it was more than just a trek – it was about experiencing history in silence, away from the hustle of city life. I’d say this place is a true hidden gem of Maharashtra.
