Exploring Doodhpathri – The Hidden Gem of Kashmir

We began our journey from Srinagar at 7 AM to explore Doodhpathri, a lesser-known paradise in Kashmir located in Budgam district. This scenic destination, which literally means “Valley of Milk”, got its name from the milky appearance of the Shaliganga River seen from a distance.

The drive was about 43 kilometers and took us around 1 hour and 45 minutes. Once there, we quickly rented raincoats and boots – rainfall is frequent, and we didn’t want our shoes soaked.

Depending on your travel preferences, Doodhpathri is a year-round destination:

  • Visit November to April for snow lovers.
  • Visit April to October for vibrant greenery, flowers, and river views.

There are two parking points: the second one brings you close to the river directly. Let your cab driver know in advance, or they might stop early due to commission arrangements with ATV vendors.

We opted for an ATV ride from the first point – and it was a fantastic decision. The standard rate is ₹2500 per person, but with negotiation, we got two rides for ₹3000. The ride covers 5-6 amazing viewpoints and allows you to pause, enjoy, and even ride the ATV yourself!

We reached the Shaliganga River, the main point of Doodhpathri. We spent over 2 hours there – enjoying the views, balancing stones by the river, clicking pictures, and even getting our couple shots clicked by a sweet local kid.

Doodhpathri was undoubtedly one of the best parts of our Kashmir journey. If you’re looking for an offbeat, peaceful, and stunning place – don’t miss this one!
