Some journeys leave an indelible impression on you, not because they are the most difficult or longest, but because of the experiences they provide. For me, Rohida (also called Vichitragad) Fort was just that. This fort, located in the Sahyadri hills near Bhor and only a short ride from Pune, was the highlight of my first monsoon trip.
From the moment we left Pune on a misty morning, riding through damp roads with tea breaks along the way, until the moment I stepped on the fort’s windswept walls shrouded by deep fog, it felt like I had entered another universe. The history, the gorgeous valleys, the heavy drizzle, and the exhilaration of discovering the “wrong route” first all contributed to this trek’s remarkable experience.
A Glimpse into History
Rohida Fort is more than just a natural marvel; it also has significant historical importance. Built during the Yadav period, the fort had its first important turning point when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj beat the Bandals and gained possession of it. The fort was given up to the Mughals in 1666 as part of the Treaty of Purandar. However, like many other forts, Rohida reverted to Swarajya shortly after Shivaji Maharaj reclaimed it. Standing atop the walls now, one can’t help but think of the strategic warfare and resilience this fort saw centuries ago.

What to See on Rohida Fort
- Rohideshwar Mandir – A modest yet spiritually rich temple dedicated to Lord Rohidmalla (popularly known as Bhairoba). Inside, you’ll discover idols of Lord Ganesh, Bhairoba, and Bhairavi. A tiny water tank and few square graves are in front of the temple, contributing to the antique atmosphere.
- Rohida contains six bastions, and astonishingly, the majority of them are still intact. These sturdy buildings provide insight into the fort’s military history.
- The Entrance Gates – The fort features three entrance gates, the first of which is embellished with various sculptures of Lord Ganesh and capped with a gorgeous arch. Walking through these historic gates is like going back in time.
- Water Cisterns – Natural cisterns on the fort provide water throughout the year, which must have been critical for those who lived here centuries ago.
Trek Routes – How to Reach Rohida Fort
There are two primary routes to Rohida:
- Via Bajarwadi (Recommended) is the most popular and straightforward option. From Pune, take a bus from Swargate ST station to Bhor, then another bus to Bajarwadi village, the starting point for the hike. This trail is picturesque, uncomplicated, and suitable for beginners.
- Via Ambawade/Hatnoshi (Not Recommended): While doable, this approach is steep and exhausting, requiring over two hours to reach the summit. It also lacks the stunning vistas of the Bajarwadi path, thus many trekkers believe it is not worth the extra effort.
If driving by private vehicle, look for a sign pointing to Rohida Fort after you enter Bhor. Do not take the first right (a mistake many people do, including us). Instead, ask locals about the Bajarwadi path, which is only 2-3 kilometers from the board.
Things to Carry
- At least 1 litre water per person
- Dry snacks or biscuits for energy
- Glucon D / ORS to stay hydrated
- Rainwear and proper shoes if trekking in monsoon
Final Thoughts
The Rohida (Vichitragad) Fort hike is not the most difficult in the Sahyadris, but it provides the ideal balance of history, nature, and monsoon charm. The fort, with its intact bastions and historic gates, narrates stories of bravery and perseverance, while the walk from Bajarwadi rewards you with breathtaking scenery.
