Monsoon is beautiful but risky. The dam releases water without warning, and campsites shut down. October to February is the sweet spot — cool weather, clear skies, and manageable crowds. March onwards gets hot, and the lake starts shrinking.

It’s about 165 kilometres from Pune, mostly via Ahmednagar. The drive takes three and a half hours if you leave early. We left at 6 AM on a Saturday, reached by 9:30, and had the whole morning to explore before check-in.
What makes Bhandardara special is the variety. You’ve got the Arthur Lake, Randha Falls (during monsoon), Sandhan Valley nearby, and the Ratangad Fort trek if you’re into that. For a budget weekend, it gives you more to do than just sit and stare at a view.
Where We Stayed
We stayed at a small homestay called Anand Sagar. It’s about 2 kilometres from the main lake, run by a retired couple. Cost us 1600 rupees a night, including home-cooked Maharashtrian meals. The rooms are basic — clean beds, attached bath, no AC. But the food was excellent, and the hosts told us which spots to visit and which to skip.

We’ve been here five times, and each time we found something new. River rafting at Ulhas River, trekking to Kondana Caves, visiting Peth Fort, or just sitting at a riverside cafe. It’s relaxed without being boring.

How We Did Alibaug Under 5000
We took the ferry from Gateway of India to Mandwa. Ticket cost 300 rupees per person. From Mandwa, we hired a shared auto to Alibaug for 50 rupees each. Stayed at a homestay near Kihim Beach for 1800 rupees a night.
