We were parked at a petrol pump somewhere near Khed when Ketan did the math on his phone. “₹3,200 in fuel alone,” he said. “And we’re not even halfway through the trip.” That moment changed how we planned every road trip after that first disastrous Pune to Goa drive where we ran ₹8,000 over budget because we didn’t account for tolls, parking, or the fact that beach shacks aren’t cheap anymore.
Here’s the thing: most travel blogs tell you the pune to goa road trip cost is “affordable” or “budget-friendly.” They’re not lying, but they’re also not telling you about the ₹350 toll at Kolhapur or the ₹200 parking fee at Baga that nobody mentions. After doing this route seven times between 2023 and early 2026, we’ve tracked every rupee. This breakdown is what we wish someone had shown us before that first trip.

The Route: Which Way Actually Costs Less
Two main routes connect Pune and Goa. The NH48 via Kolhapur is 460 km and takes about 9 hours with stops. The coastal NH66 via Ratnagiri is 530 km and takes closer to 11 hours but gives you ocean views and better roads in some stretches.
We’ve done both. Multiple times.
The Kolhapur route costs less in fuel — about ₹2,800 to ₹3,200 for a sedan (15 km/litre average) versus ₹3,400 to ₹3,800 on the coastal route. But here’s what changes the calculation: the Kolhapur highway has more tolls. Five major toll plazas versus three on the coastal route. That’s an extra ₹400 to ₹500 in toll charges right there.
For your first trip, we’d say take NH48 via Kolhapur if you’re on a tight budget and want to reach faster. The coastal NH66 is worth it if you’ve got an extra day and want to stop at Ganpatipule or Ratnagiri for the night. The pune goa fuel cost difference isn’t massive, but the time and fatigue factor is.
Fuel Cost: The Real Numbers (Not the Rounded Guesses)
Let’s get specific. As of January 2026, petrol in Pune averages ₹106 per litre. In Maharashtra’s smaller towns along the route, it’s ₹107 to ₹108. Diesel is about ₹92 to ₹94.
For a sedan (Maruti Ciaz, Honda City, Hyundai Verna type), you’ll burn roughly 30 to 32 litres one way via Kolhapur. That’s ₹3,180 to ₹3,400. Round trip, you’re looking at ₹6,400 to ₹6,800 in fuel alone.
If you’re driving an SUV (Creta, Seltos, XUV), fuel efficiency drops to about 12 km/litre on highway. Same route, you’ll need 38 to 40 litres one way. That’s ₹4,000 to ₹4,200 per leg, or ₹8,000 to ₹8,400 round trip.
Here’s what nobody tells you: your mileage drops in Goa. City driving, beach hopping, AC on full blast in the afternoon heat — we averaged 10 km/litre inside Goa even in a sedan. Budget an extra ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 for local driving if you’re staying four to five days.
One more thing. Don’t tank up in Goa. Petrol there is ₹96 to ₹98 per litre (lower taxes), but the return leg through Maharashtra burns fuel bought at Pune rates if you fill up before entering Goa. Fill your tank at the last Goa petrol pump before crossing back into Karnataka border. You’ll save ₹200 to ₹300 on that one tank.
Toll Charges: Every Plaza, Every Rupee
The Kolhapur route hits you with five toll plazas. Here’s the exact breakdown as of early 2026:
Khed toll (near Chakan): ₹110
Kumbharwadi toll: ₹85
Kagal toll (near Kolhapur): ₹145
Ambikanagar toll: ₹90
Anmod Ghat toll: ₹50
That’s ₹480 one way. Double it for the return, and you’re at ₹960 in pune goa toll charges. Some plazas charge ₹10 to ₹20 more for SUVs, so budget ₹1,000 to ₹1,100 if you’re driving anything bigger than a sedan.
The coastal NH66 route has three major tolls totalling about ₹320 one way, ₹640 round trip. Cheaper on paper, but the extra 70 km adds ₹600 in fuel. You don’t really save money, you trade toll cost for fuel and time.
We use FASTag. It’s mandatory anyway, but it also saves you 10 to 15 minutes at each plaza. Load ₹1,500 before the trip. You’ll use ₹1,000 for tolls and have buffer for parking.
Accommodation: Where Couples Actually Stay (and What It Costs)
This is where road trip expenses pune goa get tricky because your choice here swings the total budget by ₹5,000 or more.
Budget stays (₹800 to ₹1,500 per night): Hostels in Anjuna and Palolem have private rooms for couples starting at ₹800. They’re clean, basic, and walkable to the beach. We’ve stayed at Roadhouse Hostels in Anjuna (₹1,200 for a private room with attached bath) and it was perfectly fine for a young couple who’s out all day anyway.
Mid-range stays (₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per night): This is where most couples land. Beach-facing guesthouses in Morjim, Ashvem, or Agonda. You get AC, hot water, a balcony, and you’re 2 minutes from the sand. We loved Sunset Beach Resort in Agonda — ₹2,800 per night in Jan 2026, includes breakfast, and the owner helped us find a mechanic when our tyre pressure light came on.
Premium stays (₹5,000 and up): Boutique resorts, heritage properties, beachfront villas. They’re beautiful. They’re also why some couples spend ₹30,000 on a 4-day trip. If that’s your vibe, go for it. Just know it’s not the road or the fuel that’s expensive, it’s this.
For a 4-night, 5-day trip, budget ₹3,200 to ₹6,000 on mid-range stays. Book directly, not through OTAs. Call the property, ask for a couple discount. We’ve gotten ₹300 to ₹500 off per night just by calling and speaking to the manager. Small family-run places almost always negotiate.
Food and Drinks: Real Daily Spend for Two
Goa isn’t cheap to eat in anymore. Not if you’re eating at beach shacks and cafes every meal.
Breakfast for two: ₹300 to ₹500 (eggs, toast, coffee at a shack)
Lunch for two: ₹600 to ₹900 (thali at a local joint or seafood at a beach shack)
Dinner for two: ₹800 to ₹1,200 (seafood, cocktails, ambience)
Snacks and drinks: ₹300 to ₹500 (coconut water, beer, evening chai)
Daily food spend: ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 for a couple if you’re eating out every meal.
We cut this in half by doing breakfast at the stay (most mid-range places include it), packing snacks for the road, and eating lunch at local Goan thali spots away from the beach. Dinner is where we splurged. Four dinners at beach shacks cost us ₹4,500, but those were the evenings we actually remember.
For a 5-day trip, budget ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 on food. If you drink, add ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. A Kingfisher at a shack is ₹150 to ₹180. Cocktails are ₹300 to ₹450. It adds up faster than fuel.

Activities, Entry Fees, and the Hidden Costs
Most beaches are free. Most forts are free. But here’s what isn’t:
Scuba diving: ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per person
Parasailing: ₹800 to ₹1,200
Jet ski: ₹500 to ₹800 for 10 minutes
Dudhsagar waterfall jeep safari: ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 per person
Spice plantation tour: ₹500 to ₹700 per person
We did scuba and one plantation tour. That was ₹9,000 for both of us. Worth it, but not something we planned for in the first trip’s budget.
Then there’s parking. Baga, Calangute, Anjuna flea market — ₹50 to ₹200 per entry depending on where you park and how long you stay. Over five days, we spent ₹600 just on parking. Small money, but it’s never mentioned in any blog’s couple road trip budget breakdown.
What a Real 5-Day Trip Actually Costs (Two Scenarios)
Let’s put it all together. Here’s what Musafir Couple spent on our last two Pune to Goa road trips, one budget-conscious and one more relaxed.
Budget Trip (Jan 2026, 4 nights, sedan, mid-range stays)
Fuel (round trip + local driving): ₹7,200
Tolls (round trip, FASTag): ₹980
Accommodation (₹2,000 x 4 nights): ₹8,000
Food (₹1,800 daily average x 5 days): ₹9,000
Activities (one water sport): ₹1,600
Parking and misc: ₹800
Total: ₹27,580 (₹13,790 per person)
That’s honest, all-in, nothing hidden.
Comfortable Trip (Jan 2026, 4 nights, sedan, better stays and more activities)
Fuel: ₹7,200
Tolls: ₹980
Accommodation (₹3,500 x 4 nights): ₹14,000
Food (₹2,500 daily average): ₹12,500
Activities (scuba + parasailing + one tour): ₹9,000
Parking and misc: ₹1,000
Total: ₹44,680 (₹22,340 per person)
Still cheaper than flying, booking a package, and losing the freedom to stop wherever you want.
What We Wish We’d Known Before the First Trip
Carry engine oil and coolant. We overheated twice on Anmod Ghat. Not fun.
Download offline maps. Patchy network between Kolhapur and Belgaum.
Start early or drive through the afternoon. Leaving Pune at 4 AM got us to North Goa by 1 PM with breakfast and chai stops. Leaving at 9 AM meant we hit Kolhapur traffic and reached Goa after dark, stressed and exhausted.
Don’t book the cheapest stay on the highway. We tried a ₹600 lodge once near Sawantwadi to save money. Regretted it. Spend ₹1,200 and sleep well.
Keep ₹5,000 as buffer. Flat tyre, unplanned detour, that beach shack that looked too good to skip — it happens. We’ve used the buffer every single trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Pune to Goa road trip cheaper than flying?
Yes, if you’re traveling as a couple and staying more than three days. A round-trip flight for two costs ₹12,000 to ₹18,000 depending on when you book. Add airport transfers, and you’re at ₹15,000 before you’ve even started the trip. A road trip’s pune to goa road trip cost in fuel and tolls is ₹8,000 to ₹9,000, and you have your own vehicle for local travel. If you’re going solo, flights might work out similar. For couples, the car wins.
What’s the best time of year to do this road trip?
October to February. Roads are in better shape post-monsoon, the weather is perfect, and Goa is lively. Avoid May and June unless you’re okay with 38-degree heat and closed shacks. Monsoon (July to September) is beautiful on the coastal route but risky on Anmod Ghat if you’re not confident in the rain.
Can I do this trip in a hatchback?
Absolutely. We’ve done it in an i20. Fuel efficiency is better (16 to 17 km/litre), so your pune goa fuel cost drops to ₹5,500 to ₹6,000 round trip. The climbs on Anmod Ghat are steep but manageable in any decent hatchback. Just don’t overload the car, and you’re fine.
Do I need to book stays in advance?
In peak season (December to January), yes. Especially if you want specific beaches like Palolem or Ashvem. Off-season, you can find stays on the spot, sometimes at better rates. We’ve walked into guesthouses in April and negotiated ₹1,500 rooms down to ₹1,000 because occupancy was low. Peak season, book at least two weeks ahead.
Ready to Hit the Road? Here’s What to Do Next
The Pune to Goa road trip isn’t about the cheapest budget or the fanciest resort. It’s about the freedom to stop for chai at a random stall, detour to a beach you saw on a signboard, and not worry about check-in times or flight schedules.
We’ve done this route enough times to know: the road trip expenses pune goa are predictable if you plan, and magical if you leave room to be spontaneous.
If you’re planning your first Pune to Goa drive and want honest advice (not generic blogs), reach out to Musafir Couple through our Instagram or YouTube. We’ll tell you which route to take, where to stay, and which beach shack makes the best prawn curry. Because that’s what real travelers do — we share what actually works, not what sounds good in a brochure.
Pack light. Start early. Keep the tank above half. And don’t skip the sunset at Cola Beach, even if it’s ₹200 in parking and an extra half hour off your plan. That’s the stuff you’ll remember long after you’ve forgotten the pune goa toll charges.
