Delhi Diaries: Explore Delhi With the Travelheal Team

Hello, guys! Today, I am going to start my new series of blogs named Delhi Diaries, where I will write about my travel stories and experiences through this Delhi series. So stay tuned until the end and enjoy my blog. I went to Delhi for an international exhibition at Yashobhumi, Sector 25, Dwarka. In this first part of the blog series, I will write about Delhi transportation and some travel tips. After reading, you will easily understand how to travel to the capital of India—Delhi.

Delhi Airport

I took a flight from Pune to Delhi on Air India. It cost me around 5k to 6k. Their hospitality was good, and the flight took around 2 hours. Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is one of the best and busiest airports in India. It is well-maintained and clean. Despite the great rush, it is efficiently managed. Terminal 3 is spacious, with a plethora of shops, restaurants, and lounges offering a diverse range of services.

One tip I suggest is that after arriving at Delhi airport, if you want to book an Ola or Uber, there is a facility near the airport exit, but it can be quite crowded. It will take time, and the fare might be higher. That’s why I recommend you go to the metro station. Traveling by Delhi Metro is affordable, easy, and fast.

Delhi Metro

Just like how Mumbai has local trains and Pune has buses, Delhi has the metro to make your journey easy. One thing I like about Delhi is the Delhi Metro. You can get a pass for one day, which costs 200 INR per person. You can travel anywhere in Delhi city using the metro.

They provide a card that you can recharge for the next day, or if you return it within 12 hours, they will refund you 50 INR from the 200 INR you paid for the metro card. Almost every tourist place, such as India Gate, Qutub Minar, Karol Bagh, and Dilli Haat, is easily accessible by metro. You can purchase the card at any metro station where you are traveling and return it at any metro station near you.

Delhi Bus

One of the most affordable ways to travel around Delhi is by bus. I used the bus service only 2 or 3 times in Delhi because I found the metro to be faster. When I took a bus from the metro station to Sarai Kale Khan, I discovered that Delhi buses offer free rides for women. This benefit is available to all women, including residents of Delhi and visitors. Women simply need to board a DTC bus or a Delhi Metro bus and show a valid ID if required.

For Delhi Metro, women can travel for free in the dedicated women’s coaches. The “pink ticket” scheme, launched in 2019, provides free single-journey tickets to women. The scheme aims to help women save money, travel farther for work, and feel safer on buses.

Delhi Rickshaws

Rickshaws are a quintessential part of Delhi’s transportation landscape. They offer a unique and flexible way to navigate the bustling streets of the city. You can find two main types of rickshaws in Delhi: cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws.

Cycle Rickshaws

Cycle rickshaws are a popular choice among Delhi residents. They are useful for short distances and in congested areas where larger vehicles might struggle. Fares for cycle rickshaws are generally negotiable, so it’s a good idea to agree on the price before starting your ride.

Auto Rickshaws

Auto rickshaws can cover longer distances more quickly compared to cycle rickshaws. They are a bit more expensive but still affordable compared to taxis. Auto rickshaws are a great option for getting around busy areas or reaching destinations that are not well-served by the metro. We used auto rickshaws to travel between tourist places around the city, such as from India Gate to Jantar Mantar.

Ola and Uber in Delhi

In Delhi, both Ola and Uber are popular ride-sharing services that offer convenient transportation options. You can use their apps to book rides, and they usually offer various types of vehicles, from budget-friendly options to more premium choices.

  • Ola: Known for its wide range of services, including Ola Auto (auto-rickshaws) and Ola Outstation (long-distance rides), Ola often has promotions and discounts specific to Delhi.
  • Uber: Also widely used in Delhi, Uber provides options like UberGo, UberX, and Uber Premier, catering to different preferences and budgets. Uber frequently updates its features and services to improve user experience.

Both platforms have similar features like ride tracking, fare estimates, and in-app payments. If you’re deciding between the two, it might come down to pricing, availability, or any specific promotions each app is offering at the time.

Delhi’s transportation is one of the best in India because of all these facilities. I traveled everywhere safely In this one week of my Delhi trip, I experienced various modes of transportation, from cycle rickshaws to the metro. Travel is all about discovering beautiful destinations, reaching them, experiencing the journey, and interacting with strangers.

Transportation plays a major role in traveling, as comfortable, fast, and affordable options can significantly enhance the experience. I explored Delhi within my budget by primarily using the metro and cycle rickshaws, and I tried to avoid Ola and Uber due to their higher cost. I hope this blog has been informative. If you have any questions related to the content, please feel free to comment. I will do my best to address them.

Important tips:

1. Use the Delhi Metro for Affordable and Fast Travel

2. Avoid Booking Ola or Uber Directly at the Airport

3. Take Advantage of Free Bus Rides for Women

4. Negotiate Cycle Rickshaw Fares

5. Consider Auto Rickshaws for Longer Distances
