Kolhapur Diaries: Discovering the Soul of Southern Maharashtra

Kolhapur, also known as “Dakshin Kashi” ages ago due to its spiritual history in this soil, It is situated at the Banks of River Panchganga in the southwest corner of Maharashtra. Kolhapur was also probably known as one of the country’s oldest religious and trade centers.

By Air:- Kolhapur Airport (Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport)

Kolhapur has a domestic airport that is connected to some of our major cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. The airport is located around 9 Km from the city center.

By Railway:- Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus (KOP)

There are several trains to reach Kolhapur from major cities they are connected with Kolhapur city,

From Mumbai:- Mahalaxmi Express, Koyna Express, and Sahyadri Express provide direct connectivity to Mumbai and Kolhapur.

From Pune:- There are frequent trains from Pune to Kolhapur, including the Maharashtra Express and Koyna Express.

By Road:- There are multiple ways by road to reach here you can either take govt transport like MSRTC or you can also take private buses to reach here, or you can also take your car and go on a road trip to Kolhapur since he highways are beautiful and has multiple connectivities

Before starting this let me take you to the beautiful festival in the nearby village of Kolhapur one of the best I have seen is  “Shri Vithal Birdev Yatra” 

So What is Vithal Birdev Yatra:-

Vithal Birdev Yatra is an annual religious festival celebrated in honor of the deity Vithal Birdev Maharaj, a revered figure in the Dhangar community, which is a traditional pastoral community in Maharashtra, India. The festival is particularly prominent in the region of Pandharpur and other parts of Maharashtra

This Yatra (Festival) takes place in the month of October or November, rituals performed here are wonderful and amazing,  people come from very far just to attend this Yatra they come with all their luggage and all the household things to cook their food.Devotees often perform traditional dances, songs, and prayers to honor Vithal Birdev Maharaj.

A significant part of the yatra is the “Palkhi” procession, where an idol or image of Vithal Birdev Maharaj is carried on a palanquin through the streets, accompanied by devotees singing bhajans (devotional songs) and chanting prayers. The entire temple is filled with turmeric everywhere. They throw turmeric as an offering to GOD and this turmeric is pure and doesn’t have any chemical content, Wherever you see it’s completely yellow everywhere a beautiful scenery you see here.

One of the most revered temples in Maharashtra, dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi also known as Ambabai. The temple is a splendid example of Hindu architecture and draws a huge number of pilgrims from all over the country. You won’t be able to step inside the temple in the month of Navratri which is the peak time for the temple as well as the surrounding places also.

2. New Palace or Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Museum

A beautiful structure with Victorian architecture, the New Palace now serves as a museum. It showcases artifacts belonging to the city’s royal family, including royal garments, weapons, and other historical memorabilia.

3. Panhala Fort

Located about 20 kilometers from Kolhapur, this fort is steeped in history and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It’s an excellent site for history buffs and trekkers. It is a good place for a small walk and to enjoy nature as well as the beauty of architecture.

4. Rankala Lake

Rankala Lake is one of the famous spots for residents of Kolhapur to spend their evenings as well as their weekends. Rankala Lake is a beautiful lake in the heart of the city. Rankala is perhaps the most popular. It is a place where people come in the evening for a stroll. It is sometimes also referred to as the Marine Drive of Kolhapur.
